Description

Delightfully soft Chocolate Chip Coffee Scones infused with rich cocoa and espresso flavors, perfect for brunch or as an afternoon treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tbsp instant espresso powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into small pieces)
  • ¾ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream (cold)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1 tsp instant espresso powder
  • 1 tbsp brewed coffee (or espresso)
  • 12 tbsp milk or cream (or water)

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and instant espresso powder in a large bowl.
  2. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients with a pastry cutter or two forks until coarse crumbs remain.
  3. Stir in the mini chocolate chips until combined.
  4. Whisk the vanilla extract into the heavy cream.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the center of the butter-flour mixture in two separate parts and carefully mix just until a dough starts to form.
  6. Pour the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  7. Turn the dough a couple of times until it comes together—do not over-mix.
  8. Form the dough into an 8-inch circle.
  9. Portion the dough with a sharp knife or bench scraper into 8 triangles.
  10. Place the dough triangles onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour to chill.
  11. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  12. Brush the chilled scones with egg wash and sprinkle the tops with turbinado sugar.
  13. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.
  14. Cool the scones on a wire rack.
  15. Make the coffee glaze by mixing the sifted powdered sugar, instant espresso granules, brewed coffee (or espresso), and cream (or milk) in a small bowl until a glaze forms.
  16. Add additional cream (or milk) if needed.
  17. Drizzle the cooled scones with glaze.
