Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 6–8 tbsp ice water
- 1 ½ cups cherry pie filling
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Coarse sugar, optional, for sprinkling
Instructions
- Whisk together flour, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl.
- Add cold, cubed butter and cut it into the dry ingredients until the texture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, mixing with a fork until the dough just comes together.
- Divide the dough into two disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Prepare the filling by mixing cherry pie filling with cornstarch.
- Roll out dough to about 1/8-inch thickness; cut into hearts using a cookie cutter.
- Place filling on half of the heart cutouts, cover with the remaining hearts, and crimp edges to seal.
- Brush tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until golden.
- Cool on a wire rack and serve.
Notes
For a healthier option, consider using fresh cherries and controlling the sugar content. Ensure proper chilling of the dough for a flakier crust.
