- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup grated cheese (like Gruyere or Parmesan)
- 1 cup crushed buttery crackers

- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown.
- Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Boil the cubed butternut squash in salted water until tender, then drain.
- Mash the cooked butternut squash in a large bowl.
- Mix in the caramelized onions, heavy cream, grated cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish.
- Top with crushed buttery crackers.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let rest for a few minutes before serving.
