Description

A delicious and hearty breakfast casserole inspired by the classic Monte Cristo sandwich, perfect for brunch gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup diced ham
  • 1 cup diced turkey or chicken
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • Salt and pepper to taste


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. Layer half of the bread slices in the bottom of the dish.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, maple syrup, salt, and pepper.
  5. Pour half of the egg mixture over the bread layer.
  6. Add the diced ham and turkey, then sprinkle with Swiss cheese.
  7. Layer the remaining bread slices on top and pour the remaining egg mixture over everything.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  9. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes or until the casserole is set and golden brown.
  10. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter version, add more maple syrup to the egg mixture.
  • Feel free to substitute the meats with your favorites or use a vegetarian option.
  • This casserole can be prepared a day in advance for convenience.
