Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups peeled and chopped apples (such as Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 cups whole milk (for Custard Sauce)
  • 4 large egg yolks (for Custard Sauce)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for Custard Sauce)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for Custard Sauce)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for Custard Sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs and vanilla.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, until just combined.
  5. Fold in the chopped apples and cinnamon until evenly distributed.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for about 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Whisk together the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl for the custard sauce.
  9. Heat the milk in a saucepan until it is just below boiling, then slowly add it to the yolk mixture, whisking constantly.
  10. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat until it thickens.
  11. Stir in the vanilla and cornstarch, and cook for another minute.
  12. Serve the cake warm with the custard sauce.

Notes

For best results, use fresh tart apples like Granny Smith. Allow the cake to cool before serving for optimal texture.
