Description

French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes combine sweet caramelized onions, savory ground beef, and melty provolone or Swiss cheese on a toasted bun. It’s a weeknight comfort food upgrade ready in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 brioche buns, split and toasted
  • 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt butter. Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Push onions to one side of the skillet. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  3. Stir in thyme, garlic, and Worcestershire. Sprinkle flour over mixture and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Pour in beef broth, stirring to combine. Simmer for 3–4 minutes until thickened.
  5. Spoon beef mixture onto toasted buns, top with cheese, and let melt before serving.

Notes

For extra depth, add a splash of sherry vinegar before serving. Toast buns to keep them from getting soggy. Double the onions if you love a richer flavor.
