Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (such as chives, parsley, or thyme)
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and fresh herbs until evenly distributed.
  4. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
  5. Mix until a soft dough forms, being careful not to overwork it.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
  7. Place the loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf to help it rise.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Let it cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add some red pepper flakes to the dough.
  • This bread is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
